In today’s world of new, expensive medicine versus generics, I came across this article about the placebo effect.
The article mentions that Harvard, NIH and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation are all doing work in this area. The article discusses placebos, medical interventions without active drug ingredients, as just not taking a pill or an injection but that there is much more involved – “It's the compassion, trust, and care. It's the ritual and symbols. It's the doctor-patient interaction." BuzzBack recently did a survey of 202 US residents to get their thought around healthcare. From that: 7 out of 10 respondents believe that doctors understand their patient needs.
I find this interesting as many of us believe in the magic of a pill – take your medicine and your problems will get better or go away. The power of the mind is an amazing thing.
